La Sagrada Familia

La Sagrada Familia is Antoni Gaudi’s most famous building transforming the cityscape and becoming the icon of Barcelona. Construction first commenced on the catholic church in 1882, this incredible modernist piece of architecture or Art Nouveau architecture is continually being built to this day. Gaudi incorporated traditional gothic ideals and mixed them with traditional Catalan architecture to create his unique architectural design. The church itself is constructed with religious symbolism. Eighteen spirals pierce the sky symbolising respectively in ascending height: the 12 Apostles, the four Evangelists, the Virgin Mary and the tallest representing Jesus. Gaudi had a great interest in nature which he was able to incorporate into the church using geometric fluidity of the spirals, circles and ovals which are apparent throughout the exterior and interior of the church and are reminiscent of cubism.
